In a high-stakes IPL 2025 playoff encounter, Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a thrilling 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) to book their place in Qualifier 2. The match, held on Friday, saw MI post a commanding total of 228/5, thanks to a stellar knock from Rohit Sharma, before successfully defending the target to eliminate the Titans from the tournament.
Rohit Sharma Leads from the Front
Former MI skipper Rohit Sharma was at his vintage best, smashing a blistering 81 off 50 deliveries, including a flurry of boundaries that set the tone early in the innings. He found able support in Jonny Bairstow (47) and Suryakumar Yadav (33), ensuring the five-time champions set a daunting total for the Titans to chase.
Despite the aggressive batting, Gujarat Titans’ bowlers made crucial breakthroughs at regular intervals. R Sai Kishore (2/42) and Prasidh Krishna (2 wickets) were the standout performers with the ball for GT, helping restrict MI from crossing the 230-run mark.
Titans’ Spirited Chase Falls Short
In response, Gujarat Titans began their chase positively, led by the in-form B Sai Sudharsan, who played a classy innings of 80 off 49 balls. His innings, laced with 10 fours and a six, kept GT in contention for most of the chase. He was well-supported by Washington Sundar, who played a quickfire 48 off 24 balls, keeping hopes alive for the Hardik Pandya-led side.
However, MI’s experienced bowling lineup, led by Jasprit Bumrah (1/27), held their nerve in the death overs. Gujarat could only manage 208/6 in their 20 overs, falling 20 runs short of the target.
